3 Card Brag Casino Game, 3 card brag casino.

Getting started

At the beginning of the game the cards are shuffled and each player at the table puts an agreed amount into the pot, lets say £1 for an example

Each player is then dealt 3 cards face down. The player to the left of the dealer is 1st to act. There is no checking in brag, it’s has got to be a bet. At this point players can either look at their cards or decide not to. If you have not seen your cards you can play the hand “blind” this means all player who have seen their cards are playing open. Players who are “open” must pay double what ever the blind bet is.

The betting continues around the table in a clockwise direction and each player must bet the same as the person before them to stay in the hand. The choices you have are to fold, bet or raise. The stakes are usually decided before the game starts as to a minimum and maximum bet, often there is no limit.

The betting carries on until 2 players are left and the rest have “stacked” their cards, at this point players can call to see who has the best hand or continue to bet and raise.

Important: you can never call a blind man

If one player is blind and one player is open the open better must continue until either the blind better looks, in which case he could call or wait until the blind man calls him.

Some rules say to call you have to put twice as much as the other player has bet into the pot to see who has won.

Once the call has happened the two remaining players turn their cards and the highest hand wins. See hand rankings.

The winner takes all the chips in the pot and all cards are placed on the bottom of the pack and the dealer position moves one place to the left.

Important: the cards are never shuffled again until a prial comes out which is 3 of a kind house rules

If you run out of chips in an active hand you can place your cards on the pot “cover the pot” the other players continue in a “side pot” much the same as being all in at texas hold-em.

Also if you have covered the pot and lost you can’t suddenly pull £100 from you pocket to carry on the next hand. Having no money in brag means HAVING NO MONEY!

The handranks are listed below. Check it out to make sure you know if a run beats a flush!

The ranking of hands

Most people will be familiar with these hands but for beginners and poker players there are a few to watch out for. The one most likely to catch a poker player out is that in 3 card brag a straight known as a run beats a flush! Hands below are in order from low to high

Hands below are in order from low to high.

  • High card: all three cards count here. Ace high is best obviously although an ace can count as high or low when making a run (straight). Example ace - king - 10 would beat ace - king - 9 as the 10 is higher than the 9.

  • A pair: aces are the highest pair followed by king, queens, jacks down to 2’s. All three cards play again so if two player both had a pair of 7’s the highest 3rd card would win. Odd’s of getting a pair are 5/1

  • If any hands in brag are exactly the same the player who called loses.

  • The flush: again all 3 cards play so an ace king ten flush would beat an ace king seven flush. No suit is higher than any other. Odd’s of getting a flush are 19/1. A flush does NOT beat a straight (run) in 3 card brag.

  • A straight known better as a “run” ace -2 - 3 is the highest followed by ace - king - queen and so on. Odd’s of getting a run are 30/1

  • A straight flush ace - 2 - 3 is the highest followed by ace- king – queen. Odd’s of a running flush are a staggering 459/1

  • Three of a kind or a prial three three’s is the best hand to have in brag, followed by 3 aces then kings and so on. Odd’s on hitting a prial are also 459/1

  • The odd’s on getting three threes is 5524/1

Three card poker

This very popular game is based on the game of 3 card brag and is sometimes referred to as britbrag. There are four betting positions, ante, pair plus, play and prime.

Place a bet on the ante section and the dealer will deal three cards to each person. Look at your cards and decide if you want to play.

If you do play, place a bet equal to your ante bet on the play section and place your cards under the play bet. If you do not want to continue simply fold your cards and your ante bet loses.

You can make an additional bet on the pair plus section where you bet that your hand will contain a pair or better. Winning hands will be paid according to the pay table below.

PRIME is another additional side bet. To play, just place your bet on the prime betting section. To play the prime you must also be playing either the ante section or pair plus. You are betting that your hand will contain three cards, all of the same colour. If it does, you will be paid at odds of 3 – 1. If your three cards are all the same colour and the dealer also has 3 cards the same colour as the cards in your hand you will be paid at odds of 4 – 1. If any one of the three cards in the players hand is a different colour to the others then your prime side wager will lose.

Rank of hands

  • Straight flush 35-1

  • 3 of a kind 33-1

  • Straight 6-1

  • Flush 4-1

  • Pair even

Below is the most comprehensive and informative guide to playing 3 card brag. If you’re looking for a specific rule or part of the game overall then using the quick links below will help you narrow down your criteria.

3 card brag rules

Getting the 3 card brag rules in place before starting a game for real money is one of the most important things you can do.

This ensures everyone knows what’s going on and saves disagreements or worse as the game progresses.

Here we take a complete look at the rules and how to play 3 card brag. Further down we go through the 3 card brag hand rankings with a quick reference guide.

If you want to learn how to play? Then sit back, relax and get ready to read as we pretty much take a walk through of a hand and how to play 3 card brag.

Quick rules guide:

  • The cards are never shuffled unless a prial is shown

  • A run beats a flush

  • Ace – 2 – 3 is the highest run

  • 333 is the highest prial and highest hand

  • Caller loses if 2 identical hands are shown

  • A blind man can raise an open man

  • An open man can NOT raise a bling player

  • When 2 players remain an open player can call a blind player after 3 rounds of 1v1 betting

  • All 3 cards count in a hand. A – K – 7 would beat A – K – 6

  • Play always moves clockwise

Dealing the cards

Grab a pack/deck of cards from behind the bar, find some waifs and strays with a few quid in their pockets, pull some chairs up to a strange round table that you don’t all quite fit around, and you’re ready to play!

To start a game give the cards a good shuffle. This is the only time the pack is shuffled unless a prial (3 of a kind) is dealt.

Whoever has the cards simply dealt one card face up to each player in a clockwise direction starting on your immediate left. Whoever has the highest card is the dealer.

2 cards the same value? No problem, deal those players another card again clockwise until someone wins. Ready? Thank F$uk for that, now lets play.

Once you have established the first dealer the game can get started. At this point, all players place an ante into the pot. The dealer then deals 1 card at a time to each player in a clockwise direction. That means you deal to your left and play always goes in this direction throughout the game.

Once all players have 3 cards face down with the dealer dealing himself the final card it’s up to the player to the left of the dealer to either bet, fold, look (open) or don’t look (playing blind). Let’s look at how the betting works in more detail.

Betting in 3 card brag

The betting used may seem a bit strange or complicated at first. However, it really is pretty simple and you will get the hang of it quite quickly.

3 card brag hands

Along with learning the rules to this game, understanding the 3 card brag hands is equally important. There are a few unique hands that rank higher than you may well expect.

Poker players, for example, will get confused as to whether a flush beats a run or vice versa. So below are the 3 card brag hand rankings to help you play.

Also, remember a run is known as a straight in poker. It’s a RUN in brag so don’t bring your poker lingo into this real mans card game.

Brag hand rankings high to low

  • A prial: 333 is the highest followed by AAA, KKK, QQQ, 222 being the lowest

  • Running flush: (a run all the same suit) A-2-3 is the highest followed by A-K-Q. 2-3-4 is the lowest

  • A run: 3 cards in value order. A-2-3 is the highest followed by A-K-q, K-Q-J and so on down to 2-3-4

  • A flush: all 3 cards the same suit. Value counts so the highest flush is A-K-J, the lowest being 2-3-5

  • A pair: all 3 card values count again so K-K-A would beat K-K-Q for example. Aces are the highest pair followed by kings, queens and so on.

  • High card: ace high is the highest but again all 3 cards add value to the and. A-K-J would beat A-K-10 for example.

The main points to remember where 3 card brag hands are concerned are:

  • A flush beats a run

  • A 2 3 is the highest run

  • 333 is the highest hand

  • All 3 card count

Hopefully, that’s cleared things up a bit.

The history of 3 card brag

3 card brag is a 16th-century british card game and one of the early ancestors of poker. The elizabethan card game primero (from as far back as 1526) is thought to be the main influence behind brag.

3 card brag is part of the bluffing family when it comes to card games. In reality bluffing rarely comes into it and it’s usually just about who has the most bottle!

3 card brag was immensely popular in the 1980s and 1990s and played in most pubs or clubs for real money.

The explosion of UK poker sites and texas holdem, in particular, which stemmed from the USA caused the game of brag to lose its popularity. Yet, it’s still played today and I expect it to make a huge comeback within the next few years.

Amazingly 3 card brag in its best multiplayer form is not yet available online, multi-player poker yes, brag no. You can play 3 card brag online against the casino by choosing one from the list below.

Online casinos with 3 card brag

Before we get too excited multiplayer 3 card brag you would play against other people isn’t available online yet. This is very disappointing but something that should change over the next few years.

You can, however, play 3 card brag against the casino in where the excitement and history are noticeable. I suppose the fact online casinos dish out a welcome bonus is a reason to give it a go at the very least.

Three card brag

Three card brag is a card game with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. It’s widely considered to be the first british card game to use the concept of “bluffing,” thus paving the way for the poker variants we know and love today. We cover the rules of three card brag and explain how to play this entertaining game for real money bets.

Rules of 3 card brag

3 Card Brag Casino Game, 3 card brag casino.

Three card brag is a popular game played among friends.

The aim of three card brag is to get the best three card hand possible, beating all other players – although you also have the option of bluffing (“bragging”). Bluffing means you can lie about the value of your hand in a bid to deceive other players in the hopes they’ll believe you have a stronger hand than theirs and fold out of the game.

The value of the initial ante bet must be established before gameplay commences, along with the minimum and maximum amount of the initial bet and a limit on the amount that a bet can be increased by each subsequent player.

How to play three card brag

Once the betting rules have been established, gameplay unfolds as follows:

  • Ante bets are placed by all players.

  • The dealer now deals three face-down cards to each player, one at a time.

  • Players look at their cards, not revealing their hand to anyone else. Anyone choosing to play blind can now do so (explained in further detail below).

  • Betting now begins from the left of the dealer. Players have the choice to fold (forfeit their ante bet and eliminate themselves from the game) or bet, which requires any bet amount within the agreed minimum and maximum betting limits, provided it’s equal to the previous player’s bet or higher. If you can’t at least match the size of the bet before you, you must fold.

  • Betting continues as many times around the group as necessary until only one or two players remain in the game. If all but one player folds, that player is the winner and takes the pot. If two players remain, a third betting option now becomes available, known as “see,” which costs double the amount of the previous bet.

  • If you pay to see the other player’s cards, they must now reveal their three-card hand. If your hand is better, you need to prove it by showing it to the table. If your hand is worse or equal, you can fold without having to reveal your cards. In the event of a draw, the player who paid to “see” is the loser.

Blind betting explained

After the initial three card hands have been dealt, players have the option of betting blind, which means you bet without looking at your cards. Choosing to play blind means each of your bets will cost half the amount of the standard non-blind bet. You can choose to look at your cards at any stage, however you will no longer be considered a blind player and will be subject to the standard betting amounts.

If you’re playing blind and all other players fold, you don’t win the pot, but instead the pot carries over to the next game and you’re allowed to keep your current hand. When the next deal takes place, you can then decide whether to play with your new hand or keep your old one.

Hand rankings and odds

Hand rankings in three card brag are slightly different to classic poker, and come with some different terminologies. The potential hands are listed below in value from best to worst, along with their odds:

  • Prial (three of a kind) – odds of 459 to 1

  • Running flush (straight flush) – odds of 459 to 1

  • Run (straight) – odds of 31 to 1

  • Flush – odds of 20 to 1

  • Pair – odds of 1 to 6

  • High card – odds of 3 to 1

The best possible hand you can get is a prial consisting of three threes (which comes with odds of 5,524 to 1), although all other prial hands rank in regular order descending from three aces to three twos.

Strategy

One of the odd factors of gameplay in three card brag is that cards are rarely shuffled, and are instead simply placed at the bottom of the deck after each round. The only time cards are shuffled is at the beginning of the game and when a round is won with a prial hand. This means technically, if you’re astute enough and familiar with the concept, card counting could be applied in three card brag.

While it’s unlikely players of this casual card game will bother with card counting, recommended three card brag strategy suggests that players should embrace the concept of bluffing. Playing by the odds too rigidly is a sure way to lose quickly, and as bluffing is half the fun of this game, three card brag is a great chance to work on your poker face.

Playing blind should also only be done by experienced players. This is a difficult practice that takes a certain amount of expert knowledge to do well. If you do want to have a crack at betting blind, make it an occasional thing and ensure you’re financially prepared for the likely chance of losing.
