Ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch - familiar spotlight - sillymander

Published april 18, 2013, 3:52 a.M. About ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch

By jason mitchell

You won't run into sillymander until roughly halfway through your adventure. Once oliver and friends begin searching for the magic stones you will find yourself in the vault of tears where sillymander is a fairly common foe. Their recruitment chance is a little on the low side but if you want a fast, reliable attacker it is well worth the effort to add one to your party. Sillymander is one of the fastest familiars in the game and begins with a fast growth rate that slows down as it metamorphoses, keeping it relevant well into the later portions of the game.

Proper care and feeding

Attack +25
magic attack +25

Sillymander is overall one of the most well-rounded familiars available. It has a respectable defense and evasion, the defend command and an incredible movement speed. The weakest area (if you can call it that) is sillymander's offense. Much of the lower attack stat is offset by a fast attack speed, but it never hurts to give it a little boost. Since it learns a handful of elemental tricks, a boost to magic attack helps if you ever get stuck in place or are fighting a foe that is dangerous to approach. If you plan on metamorphosing into petramander as its final form, we
recommend moving some of those points into defense because of petramander's weakness to physical damage.

Metamorphosis

Sillymander is able to metamorphose early, but it is worthwhile to hold off on your first metamorphosis for as long as you are comfortable. Once it metamorphoses into slamander its stat growth slows a bit, so it's important to maximize your growth early on. As a slamander, it also shrugs off sillymander's weakness to both physical and fire damage and really begins to put its defenses together.

Pyromander

Sillymander is a familiar whose final forms are nearly polar opposites. Pyromander is geared toward dealing damage, damage, and more damage. It has higher attack scores overall than petramander and learns some strong physical and fire elemental tricks to compliment that fantastic movement and attack speed. Pyromander is great at its job, as it can literally run circles around most enemies and really make the most of its power.

Petramander

On the flip side, petramander makes a great supporting familiar. It regains sillymander's weakness to physical attacks which means that even though it has high defense, it's still going to take some damage if it gets too close to an enemy. To counteract this, petramander has a 50% resistance to fire, water, and storm elements. I also has an incredible magic defense which at times makes it appear almost immune to damage against foes who rely on elemental tricks.

Best buddies

The familiars your pair sillymander with will greatly be influenced by which of its final forms you choose. Being a vermes familiar it is best suited for teaming with oliver, but as a petramander it can fit just fine with esther or marcassin, and as a pyromander it is advisable to put with swaine as a very mobile attacker to compliment slow moving tanks. With oliver, pyromander covers most damage needs and can free up a slot for oliver to pack along an extra supporting familiar. Alternatively, pairing oliver with a petramander can allow him to take over the tanking role against casters and enemies that rely heavily on elemental tricks.

Tips and tricks

It's very easy to get carried away with using sillymander in an offensive capacity but don't overlook some of the support tricks it learns. Sillymander and its other forms learn a variety of tricks that can lock your opponent in place or cause a variety of status effects that can really help some of your slower allies catch up.

If you've got any unique tricks for using sillymander or a familiar you think it works great with, let us and everyone else know in the comments section below!

Ni no kuni: the 10 best familiars, ranked

Ni no kuni is famous for its pokémon-esque familiar system, and here are 10 of the most useful and adorable collectable critters in the franchise.

Ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch originally launched in 2013 for playstation 3 to critical acclaim. It went on to have a sequel with ni no kuni 2: revenant kingdom for playstation 4 in 2018. Fortunately for fans who missed out on the first title, the game was re-released for playstation 4, PC, and nintendo switch in 2019.

Ni no kuni follows the story of oliver, a young boy who discovers that he belongs in another world and is actually a wizard. It's up to oliver and his companion drippy to save the other world from the evil wizard shadar. There are familiars that can help in battles, an,d once esther has joined your team, you can recruit even more familiars. Check out the ten best familiars below, excluding the golden versions, which are stronger counterparts but are only available post-clear.

10 dinoceros

As part of the dracones genus, dinoceros is an ideal familiar for oliver. It is vulnerable to poison but has nothing that it is highly vulnerable to. Additionally, it's easy to level and has some very powerful moves.

Dinoceros can be found at the genie's steps, and it metamorphoses into destroceros, before becoming either catastroceros or demoliceros. To ensure its final form is the powerhouse you want it to be, you should wait until destroceros learns belly buster at level 16 before metamorphosing it into its final form, and catastroceros is usually the preferred choice.

9 whippersnapper

Whippersnapper is arguably the best familiar to fulfill the role of a tank for oliver. As part of the vermes genus, it has an affinity with oliver. It can be found in the deep dark wood area.

Its next evolutionary form is trapper snapper, and then it can morph into either snaptrap or claptrap, both of which are good. However, if you find you need a little extra help, choose claptrap as its final form, as it has some healing tricks it can use to support the party.

8 bonehead

Bonehead is part of the mortui genus, and this makes it the perfect choice for an attacker for swaine who has an affinity with this genus. Not only does it deliver strong attacks, but it also has a resistance to physical attacks. Boneheads can be found in the golden grove-south area and morph into bone ranger before its final forms of either bone brigadier or bone baron.

Bone baron is the recommended choice for players, which can also be found in the shimmering sands desert area. Generally, however, it is better to level your familiars yourself to make them as strong as possible.

7 hooray

Hooray is part of the aquatica genus, and this makes it an ideal attacker for esther's team. Arguably, it is the best attacker for her, as not only is it a powerful attacker, but it has high speed and defense too. Additionally, it has a good range of offensive tricks at its disposal.

Hoorays can be found in the sea just south of the summerlands, generally around castaway cove. It metamorphoses into hip-hooray before its final branching forms of grimray or springray.

6 oroboros

Oroboros is part of the vermes genus, making oliver the best choice for this critter due to his affinity with them. It has a high magic stat that makes it a brilliant spellcaster or healer choice for oliver to use depending on the final form that the player chooses.

Oroboros is found in the rolling hills area and metamorphoses into chloroboros before its final forms of either obscuroboros or fluoroboros. For a healer role, choose fluoroboros, but, for a spellcaster role, choose obscuroboros.

5 monolith

Monolith is part of the automata genus, so it is best used with swaine who has an affinity with this type. Monolith is a brilliant tank choice for swaine, as it has a natural resistance to physical attacks as well as a high defense.

Monoliths can be found in the bayous area near castaway cove and metamorphose into megalith before its final forms of paleolith or neolith. Both final forms are good, but paleolith has a handy trick called "upsy-daisy," which revives an unconscious ally.

4 napcap

Napcaps are exceptional spellcasters and very handy healers to have in your party. As part of the flora genus, they are best used with esther.

Napcaps are found in the golden grove area and metamorphose into duncecap before its final forms of madcap or nightcap. To make it the most efficient healer, you might want to get it to level 32, as duncecap to learn "second wind," before morphing it into a third form. Nightcap is the better healer/support role of the final forms based on the tricks it can learn.

3 sillymander

Sillymander is the fastest familiar in the game and can also hit hard, making it a great choice for an attacker in your team. As part of the vermes genus, they are best used with oliver who has an affinity with them.

Sillymanders can be found in the vault of tears, and it metamorphoses into slamander before it transitions into its final forms of pyromander or petramander. Pyromander is the best choice, as petramander has a weakness to physical attacks.

2 lumberwood

Lumberwood is of the flora genus and is best suited for esther. It is the best tank in the game, and, if you have esther set to defense and she has this little guy out, she essentially never dies.

Lumberwood can be found in the no longer mine area and metamorphoses into limberwood before turning into either umberwood or wildwood. Wildwood is the preferred choice of most players, but, if you find you are struggling a little, then choose umberwood as it has some healing tricks.

1 toko

Toko is capable of becoming one of the best powerhouse healers if the player is willing to put the time in. Not only is it a grind to obtain as it only has a 2% chance of being recruited and is prone to running away, but it also takes a long time to build it up to its final forms.

Tokos can be found on ugly duckling isle and give massive amounts of EXP as a reward, so that's one upside to farming them. Its next form is tokotoko, eventually metamorphosing into either tokotocold or docotoko. Tokotocold can heal the entire party with its healing rain trick, while docotoko is a good choice for party buffs and removing status ailments as well as being able to revive party members.

Why sillymander?

Why sillymander?

Ni no kuni sillymander, ni no kuni sillymander.

So, I've been reading a lot of guides on party building with familiars, and a lot of them keep saying that sillymander is the best offensive familiar for oliver. My question is why? Even at 3rd tier with pyromander at level 32, his attack isn't even as high as my level 21 obscuroboros. Why do people like it so much when it can't deal damage to save its life?

Also any suggestions for replacements would be nice.

I used the dinoceros on oliver as his attacker. He broke the game. Between that and tons of toko farming to get 3rd forms and one of the errands of derwin to get 3rd form familiars, I outleveled pretty much everything by like 5 levels until the post game content.

With that being said, it's the same reason why you pick bone baron over bone brigadier.

If you just want to beat the game and get over it (I did, I wasnt interested in post game content) bone brigadier is the better option BECAUSE HIS STAT GROWTH IS EARLY. What this means is that he gets big stat gains from like level 1- 50, or even 70.

However, based on the math, I guess it's the opposite for bone baron. At max level (99), bone baron has about 50 more stat points than brigadier, making him stronger, but he starts off weaker earlier.

I don't know if that's the case with sillymander, but that's why some are better than others at different stages of the game. Also, obscuroboros is I think the best caster familiar for oliver so you can still use him for that !

If you want a good familiar for oliver then I recommend the naja line found in ding dong well. While its attack stat doesn't rank among the best, its attack speed means it attacks twice compared to other familiars.

If you want raw damage without breaking the game then the plessie line on the waters outside autumnia are great too. (if the sky goes dark then you're in the right place)

Dinoceros is ollie's best attacking familiar, but the community collectively agrees he's broken to hell and therefore sucks the fun and challenge out of it.

It's the attack speed. If you level it to max then meta it'll be a crushing machine. Especially when you get some of the higher damage items later

so, let's see, what we have: creature compendium: "this peace-loving creature favors scenic spots by the water. Sadly, its gaudy scales mean it cannot hide from predators." at ni no kuni sillymander
