Where is “no longer mine”?

Where is the location called no longer mine?

I am trying to seduce a lumberwood so that I can begin training it into an umberwood, which supposedly has the best final defense in the game.

On a related note (and I supposed I'll find out once I get there), my team is in their low 30s right now. At what level can the group comfortably beat the lumberwoods?

No longer mine is southeast of autumnia and south of the spindle.

The spindle is east of autumnia.

There should be a glowing spot that periodically spawns giving you 555G.

You can get a lumberwood ticket from errand 075 that will allow you to get the familiar with the sign you are looking for (save beforehand and keep resetting until you do). (A planet sign lumberwood is very rare, but it has better defense compared to a double star signed one)

The lumberwood lives on no longer mine island, which is north of teeheeti (where the fairygrounds is). You can get there by boat, but I'd advise being in the mid-to-late 30's before you attempt it. I wasn't doing that much grinding, and I had a little trouble until after I'd completely cleared hamelin's quest line.

The lumberwood spawns consistently in the southwestern forest on this island. I've found them very rarely in other encounters. Your best bet is to gateway to motorville and back to reset the encounter and fight it over and over again.

If you wait until you can get the lumberwood ticket from errand 075, you're going to be waiting until you've fought some relatively difficult monsters after the end of the game. You're unlikely to get the maximum stats variant of the lumberwood from serenading them, but at least you'll have one to use for the interim - it's a very powerful defender.

"ni no kuni" walkthrough: the king of curries

Matt bird writes all sorts of nonsense, but he dedicates a large chunk of his time to writing game walkthroughs.

The secrets of metamorphosis are yours! Shadar is going DOWN! It's off to see how things are going in al mamoon!

But wait! As soon as you leave the gorge leading to the temple of trials, a volcano explodes to life in the distance! Old smoky is on the rampage, so to speak, and it's implied that something sinister is at work. Shadar? Probably so. You really should deal with that.

. . . But, this being an RPG, you can also afford to do a side quest or two—and now that you have bridge, you can complete the quest for the curry guy in al mamoon. Worth the bother? Most definitely.

Visit raj

Head to the milk fountains in the north of al mamoon. The petitioner, a beefy fellow named raj, has his cart set up beside the eastern fountain. He's lacking the ingredients needed for tikka mahala, a legendary curry. He asks that you go looking for them, opening up the king of curries.

Finding the beef and rice

To complete the dish he needs fluffy rice, tender beef, and a pinch of the sheikh's special spices. The beef and the rice are a piece of cake—go visit the hootique to pick up a bit of each.

Ni no kuni catch lumberwood, ni no kuni catch lumberwood.

Finding the spices

The spices are another matter. They can be procured from the sheikh of spices, found outside swift solutions. Unfortunately, he's lacking in enthusiasm, which opens up the task the sheikh of spice task. If you haven't already used it, there's a merchant on this very street with enthusiasm; if you have, you'll have to check the courtyard way back in ding dong dell. Completing this task will earn you two sandwiches, 100 guilders, and two merit stamps.

Though the sheikh doesn't have the ingredients to make his spices. He'll need a tumeric root and three generous pinches of spicy seeds. The root can be procured from another bounty hunt that will be opened when you complete this task, and the seeds from a volcano.

  • The spicy seeds: the seeds aren't that difficult to get. Check your minimap on the world map. To the east is a sinister-looking area leading up to a volcano. Yonder lies old smoky, the active lava spire that is your next major destination. You can get two of the pinches of spicy seeds at any time, though for the last one you'll need the bridge spell. The enemies here aren't much tougher than in the desert, though icy and watery attacks will make life much easier.

Ni no kuni catch lumberwood, ni no kuni catch lumberwood.

  • The precious root: the holder of the root is the lumberwood, a beast that's perched atop a cliff overlooking golden grove's southern exit. Though it's a bounty hunt, the lumberwood is an absolute pushover if you use a barrage of physical attacks. Smack it down and you'll get the tumeric root.

And, when you report the bounty, you'll get five bars of milk chocolate, 200 guilders and two merit stamps.

Dish out the tikka malhala

Bring both of these ingredients to the sheikh of spice and he'll quickly combine them into a bowl of sheikh's special spices. Take all three ingredients to raj and he'll serve up a dish of tikka malhala—and then give you five of them, as well as 200 guilders and four merit stamps. This might not seem that great, but for this point in the game, tikka mahalas are by far the best healing item at 150 HP a pop. You can also buy more from raj for 200 guilders each, which is a fairly reasonable price.

Errands

Time to save al mamoon from certain fiery destruction? Not yet! Now that you're back from the temple of trials and can catch familiars, someone has an errand for you. Check out the errand board to get the details.

1. A man in al mamoon is looking for someone who is capable of befriending creatures.

The man is standing near the inn. His name is derwin, and he's a research in the field of familiarology. He'll unlock the task desert creatures, which requires you to bring him two creatures for study. One looks like a bunch of unripe bananas, and the other wears a purple turban. An easy enough task, this—just get into fights with green bunchers and turbandits until you catch one of each. This may take you five minutes, this may take you two hours—you may even have them both already. Regardless, it is possible.

Ni no kuni – the skinny on familiars

Ni no kuni catch lumberwood, ni no kuni catch lumberwood.

Yes, I realize that I’m about 2-3 years late to this party but for the past week I’ve been playing the playstation 3 exclusive, ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch. To my surprise I have not been able to find a place which consolidates tips and info on the selection, use, handling, and care of familiars. As such I’ve decided to create one on my own for anyone who are interested. This won’t go into the basic information but rather the advanced info which doesn’t really get stated anywhere in game or is poorly explained.

General familiar info
as you know familiars can be evolved or “metamorphosed” having 3 tiers of being. Tier 1 is the standard run of the mill bad boy. Tier 2 is an upgraded evolution in which the stats gained per level are greater then tier 1. Tier 3 is the final evolution in which the stats gained per level are superior then its tier 2 counterpart. Tier 3 is also where things get fun, because each familiar has 1 of 2 possible paths they can decide upon, each offering their own unique abilities depending on your use for them. The catch with evolving your familiars is that they will reset to level 1 upon metamorphosing them. This means you’ll want to keep a few strong familiars around until your newly minted tier 2’s and eventually 3’s are brought up to fighting form.

Tier 1 (basic) —> tier 2 (upgraded)* —> tier 3 (final form A)** or tier 3 (final form B)**

*to go from tier 1 to tier 2 you will need a planet/star/sun/moon DROP (which ever sign your familiar is will be the DROP type you use)
**to go from tier 2 to tier 3 you will need a planet/star/sun/moon JUMBO DROP (which ever sign your familiar is will be the DROP type you use)

Jargon aside there’s a boat load of familiars you can catch, some say 300+, others say 400+, it doesn’t really matter. Truth is you’ll only ever really need to play with 15 to 20 of these bad mama-jama’s, and if chosen wisely they’ll carry you straight to the end of the game and even into post-game content.

Genus, roles, & advanced info
since you can only have 3 familiars per person the key to success ultimately boils down to 2 things; favored genus’s and classification of roles. Each party member has a favorite genus of familiar (3 genus’s per person in fact). Pairing a favored familiar genus type with the correct person leads to a 10% increase in stats versus if it’s paired with a non-favored person.
General consensus is that you’ll want to select your team based on the roles their attributes are strongest towards making the most use of them and their abilities in battle.

The roles are;
TANK (high defense) are meant to absorb damage (physical or magical), but preferably both.
HEALER (high magical attack) are meant to provide you critical HP replenishment .
FIGHTER (high physical attack) are meant to deal physical damage.
CASTER (high magical attack) are meant to unleash spell damage.

Each tier of familiar has a unique maximum level (max-lvl), and depending on the familiar that max-lvl can vary. The benefit to maxing your familiar’s level before metamorphosing to its next tier is said to be marginal. Not at all necessary to reach end game, or even to dabble in post game content you will want to however ensure that you’ve learned all your abilities. Failure to do so prevents the learning of greater abilities down the road.

Want to know the max-lvl and stats for all the familiars? You can find a nifty spreadsheet right here; https://docs.Google.Com/spreadsheets/d/1jrijrpislkcri88tzqd6afjiq5gj-9vbsse3wldgx6k/edit?Rm=full#gid=0 (a huge thank you to however the kind soul is that created this)

Building & fine tuning your team
once you gain the ability to catch familiars do some research on which one’s you’d like to play with and keep as rotation. This may have you back track a bit into the golden grove, ding dong dell and its surrounding deep dark woods and area. It’s also going to require a fair bit of patients as the capture system is random with each familiar having a catch % (shown in the spreadsheet link above), but its going to be worth it!

It’s around this phase in the game in which a modicum of tediousness and difficulty ensues, as grinding out a few levels would be in your best interest. Enemies off-continent will be entering their tier 2 evolution and will hand your ass to you on a silver platter (trust me I’ve died and lost thousands upon thousands of gold over it). This made me rethink my strategy on familiars and who I wanted to play with. Here’s the list I came up with based on reading various sites, forum posts, top 10’s, v-logs, blogs, commentaries, and testimonials;

Oliver: whippersnapper (tank) – sillymander (fighter)* – oroboros (caster/healer)
esther: lumberwood (tank) – hooray (fighter)* – sleepeafowl (caster) – napcap (healer)
swaine: monolith (tank) – bonehead (fighter) – wisp (caster)* – kipper (healer)
marcassin: potty (tank) – lightshade (fighter) – turbandit (caster) – relixx (healer)

Alternates: purrloiner (fighter)*, naja (fighter)*, worker bumbler (fighter), shonkey-honker (caster)*, dinoceros (fighter)

12 of these familiars are attainable on the first continent, 3 others are attainable immediately after leaving the first continent, and the remainder can only be attained at mid to late game. If you’ve noticed I placed an * beside 3 of the alternates, that’s because for the early part of the game I’ve used the alternates instead of the future end gamers.

If this list shows you anything, it’s don’t get attached to the familiars you’ve been playing with thus far. You’ll be better off replacing them sooner rather then later. Early in the game you should keep them to help level the new familiar’s you’ve decided upon keeping, but don’t be shy to switch them out once your newbies are ready.

Some familiars should definitely be leveled to max-lvl before metamorphosing them. In my case, bonehead and kipper truly benefit greatly from holding off and give them much needed boosts to their otherwise staggered stat gains. The problem is that its near freaking impossible to tell which ones need the full dragged out max-lvling and which ones don’t. To keep things simple, just metamorphose once you’ve attained all your abilities.

Over-powered familiars & feeding requirements
there are some familiars that are effectively overpowered monsters in relation to their counterparts. It’s been mostly agreed upon by the community at large that dinoceros (and it’s subsequent metamorphoses) is the most powerful physical attacker in game. Equally shonkey-honker (and it’s subsequent metamorphoses) is the most powerful magical attacker in game. Other game breakers include lumberwood, monolith, and apparently toko for their incredible defensive capabilities.

Familiars have a sweet tooth different treats grant different stat boosts, and different familiar genus’s have select preferred treats which they benefit from greatly. Your stat boost treat choice and your familiars treat preference may not line up but that doesn’t matter. Boost the stats you want till you’ve reached your bonus limit, then to push your familiar to the next heart level feed them treats they love (pro tip: each battle you encounter reduced your familiars fullness by 1, so when full, just go do a few battles).

Here’s the list on treats and their stat boost;
chocolate – increases attack
flan – increases defense
cake – increases magical attack
sundae – increases magical defense
pie – increases accuracy
ice cream – increases evasion

Here’s the list on genus and their preferred treat;
aquatica – pies
arcana – cake
automata – flans
aves – ice cream
bestiae – ice cream
daemonia – sundaes
dracones – chocolate
flora – flans
milites – chocolate
minima – pies
mortuie – cake
nobilia – pies
nymphae – cake
vermes – sundaes

If you’d like a comprehensive list of the familiars within those genus’s you can check them out here; http://ca.Ign.Com/wikis/ni-no-kuni-wrath-of-the-white-witch/treats

Last but not least I want to quickly touch upon the battle system this game uses. It’s definitely not the strongest aspect of this game and the AI which controls your non-selected characters is honestly horrendous. What made its management easier for me was setting oliver on ‘do whatever you like’, esther on ‘don’t use abilities’, and swaine on ‘back me up’, and the group focus to attack leaders target. With esther no longer burning through mana like its 1999, and swaine’s humble usage of his mana pool it allows you time to shuffle through different attack options. I personally love starting with oliver and his familiar whippersnapper (tank). He takes low damage and it allows swaine and esther to deal some good damage. When the going gets tough I then take over for another character getting them out of dodge an return to oliver. The creators of the game clearly want you in the driver seat at all times jumping from character to character. Leaving the AI to handle your affairs will only lead you to death specially in areas which the enemies are that much more powerful then you are.

It is to my delight that I’ve been completely sucked in by this game on all levels, from its story, to it artistic design, and now finally its battle system. This game has quickly risen to my top 5 (heck maybe even top 3) RPG’s of all time. As with any game it does have its flaws, but in my opinion those are easily overlooked by its far greater assets. While dealing with familiars can be complicated in the beginning it does get better and always remain fun and entertaining. Hope this helps you out in your journey through this game.
