Here's some of the rules from what I gathered:


The beginning is pretty easy. Click on the arrow-field to select the angle from which the guy will be hit off, and hold until you think it is wise to release to achieve a certain ammount of power.


Every girl has a SPECIAL move. These are triggered in the following ways:



  • The blue and yellow girls only do SPECIAL moves when the other one is the next one in line.



  • The red girl performs her special move if you have sometime before already normally been hit by her.



  • The green girl (who normally stops you) will perform a very, very powerful SPECIAL move if you have previously been hit by a normal move from another girl AND haven't touched the ground or a guy after that.



  • I haven't figured out the purple one yet. Normally, after you hit her, the next girl will be blocked, not resulting in anything but a bounce. I don't know how to trigger her SPECIAL move nor why the blocks apparently won't work with the guys.



For SPECIAL moves you must immediately click on the SPECIAL that comes up on the screen for it to complete.


Then there's aerials. You have three red ones and infinitely blue ones. The latter charge up as long as you are in the screen. Both will result in the girl from the beginning showing up again and give you a little boost, red aerials with an upwards angle, blue aerials with a downward angle.
Use these to avoid hitting the guys or the green girl without a block or special move or use it to hit a special girl or just to boost up after a special move brings you back into the screen!



  • The brown one will change your angle to upwards or downwards. Not sure which depends on what.



  • The cyan one will slow you down.

Okay, I know how the purple girl works now. She will trigger a super SPECIAL move that will get finally triggered for a random girl (in the special boxes on the right, a VS CCF will appear when that girl is in reach). When you hit that random girl with the block still in charge, the SUPER special move gets triggered and it appears to be different for each girl.



  • The red girl will make you "invincible" for a round, meaning that whenever you hit the green girl without block or special or whenever you slow to 0 you will get a boost again and keep on moving.



  • The blue girl will teleport you a long way across the screen without you hitting anyone. I haven't verified this one, though, since it happened to me only once and when I still didn't know how the game works.

Hey, that's my high score of 10k whatever, and yeah. I've only gotten the VS CCF with the blue girl. She wraps you in something and then you're carried straight for a countdown from 99. I don't understand it, but I know that it gives you a ton of distance.

That's the green girl's CCF SPECIAL. It wears off after some time, but it's pretty damn powerful.

Also, both the green and the red CCF SPECIAL seem to wear off after a while. At least with the latter it seems there is some kind of CHARGE for every BOOST you get when you are in some CCF mode.

Look at the spacing between the first 4 digits. Also best record starts with 14, not 13. It's obvious the 139 was pasted from the end :P

Here's my strats list.
Boosts



  • The red girl will punch you forward without angle change.



  • The blue girl will kick you out (I think at 45 degrees angle)



  • The yellow girl will punch you up (I think at around 60 degrees angle)




  • The red girl will 'summon' a blade, slice you up (three boosts) and shoot you out. You can get this by bounce on her once, then without touching any other girls (you can touch guys, she doesn't care) and bounce on her again. Don't forget to click when it says special.



  • The blue girl will kick you, throw you to the yellow girl, let her punch you, and then she'll kick you again (three boosts). You can get this when the blue girl is placed right before the yellow girl.



  • The yellow girl will use her butt to bump you to the blue girl, let her kick you, and then she'll punch you again (three boosts). You can get this when the yellow girl is placed right before the blue girl.



  • The green girl will give the most powerful special. First, the red girl will rush by and punch you, then the blue girl will rush by and kick you, then the yellow girl will punch you really high, then the blue girl will finally slap you forward (four boosts). According to the game, it says you can only get this when you enter impact towards her at 45 degrees angle, but that's a lie. You can get this whenever you enter at 45 degrees angle, AND you can get this if you do not touch ground after you get boosted by any of the girls. And in response to the early poster who said you can't touch guy, well, you can. Its just the ground that screws you over. As long as your impact doesn't go to the ground, you'll still be able to get the green girl's special.



  • The purple girl does not have a special, but she enables block VS CFF (see below).



Block VS CFF (comic force field)
I only know you can trigger the block VS CFF after you hit the purple girl. No idea how it is triggered (or what makes the VS CFF part appear). But here's all the block VS CFF I know.



  • The red girl will give you an explosive force field (red colored body). This will allow you to have a boost when you come to an end or try to hug the green girl. Essentially, it allows you to live longer.



  • The blue girl will give you a boost force field (blue colored body) the game called 'parachut' or something. You'll fly a real long distance (99 count down as many have mentioned).



  • The yellow girl will give you a bouncy force field (yellow colored). You will bounce (and get a boost) each time you hit the ground. I think the life span of the bounce force field is like 3 or 4 bounces.



  • The green girl (yes, she gives special too) will give you a double impact force field (green colored). You will get double the boost impact for the next three or four boosts. Hint: try to get the green girl's special with this. It'll be uber.




  • When you get double impact, try to get the green girl. You'll fly like there's no tomorrow.



  • When you have a good speed and height (IE: 200m above the ground), as you come down, click areial boost (red), then immediately click areial boost (blue), then immediately click areial boost (red) again. Then you can get around 150% of your original height and gain tons of speed.



  • If you want a cheap trick to get through the first 1000 meters real quick, aim at 10 or lower degrees angle, fire at 85% or higher. You will fly straight into the first person and get a big boost if its a girl (if its a guy or the green girl restart right away).



  • You'll only gain blue areial boost percentages when you're in the screen (well, actually, around 75% of the screen in the furthest zoomed out view). So unless you have mad forward speed, don't try to fly high. Fly high doesn't get you far unless you have speed anyways.



That's about all for now. My highest, unfortunetly, have only been around 9K, so its not worth while to post anything. If I get anything higher, I'll be sure to post back.

There's no question, HTML5 is a hot topic for developers. If you need a crash course to quickly understand the fundamentals of HTML5's functionality, you’re in the right place.


In this tutorial, I’ll cover the new semantic markup, canvas for drawing and animation, audio and video support, and how to use HTML5 with older browsers. Might be a bit more than five minutes, but I promise I’ll keep it quick. Stick with me…it’ll be worth it!


Semantic markup and page layout


There’s a great story about a university who, when building their campus, didn’t create any walking paths. They just planted grass and waited.


A year later, the grass was all worn out where people walked most frequently. So that’s where the university paved the actual sidewalks.


It makes perfect sense! The sidewalks were exactly where people actually walked.


The HTML5 new semantic elements were based on that exact same logic (see the W3C design guidance to “pave the cowpaths”).


Semantic elements describe their meaning or purpose clearly to the browser and to the developer. Contrast that with (for example) the


Developers commonly use ids and/or class names with these


In HTML5, there are new semantically rich elements that can convey the purpose of the element to both developers and browsers.


The W3C mined billions of existing webpages to discover the ids and class names that developers were already using. Once they threw out div1, div2, etc., they came up with a list of rich descriptive elements that were already being used, and made those the standards.


Here are a few of the new semantic elements in HTML5:


Because of the semantic richness, you can probably guess what most of these elements do. But just in case, here’s a visualisation:

Headers and footers are self-explanatory and nav creates a navigation or menu bar. You can use sections and articles to group your content. Finally, the aside element can be used for secondary content, for example, as a sidebar of related links.


Here is a simple example of some code that uses these elements.


I should call out a few other new elements in this code…


Did you notice the hgroup element, which grouped together my h1 and h2 headers?


The mark element allowed me to highlight or mark some important text. Finally, the figure and figcaption elements specify a figure in my content (like an image, diagram, photo, code snippet, etc.) and let me associate a caption with that figure, respectively.


Here’s what that webpage would look like when combined with some CSS. (NOTE: I borrowed this CSS from my talented teammate brandon satrom’s teched talk, but the less-than-beautiful end effect was all me.)

Now, imagine this in the hands of someone actually good at CSS (which I am not). The result is pretty powerful. The descriptiveness of the HTML makes it super easy to work with.


Finally, if you’re trying to follow along in visual studio but you’re seeing squiggly lines everywhere that VS doesn’t understand the HTML5 elements, make sure you have visual studio 2010 SP1 installed.


Then, in the visual studio menu, go to tools, options. In the left-hand navigation pane, expand text editor, HTML, and then click validation. From the target dropdown menu, select HTML5. This will give you HTML5 intellisense support. Whew!

Casual games analysis assignment: nanaca crash!


1. Main objective: keep the pedestrian (taichi) farthest in the air.
2. Players involved: 10 (including nanaca who is only controlled by the user).
3. Procedures:
1. Simply click and hold the mouse when the meter shows the preferred angle.
2. Release it at the chosen power (i.E. If you chose 90% power, the victim will fly at an extreme high angle, whereas, if you chose a lower angle, like 20%, he will fly at a linear fashion).
3. Nanaca (that would be you) will come crashing into the victim, taichi and send him flying into the air.
4. Well, as newton's law of gravity puts it, "whatever goes up must come down" - once taichi comes back to earth, his destination will be greatly influenced by any of the 9 characters (their roles will be discussed later on in the analysis) when contact occurs. Depending on which character he collides into, the effect can benefit or hinder your progress.
5. While taichi is up in the air, instead of waiting for him to come down, it is a good idea to keep your eye on the "AERIAL" icon located in the top left panel. Once taichi gradually comes in contact to the ground, the aerial icon will either highlight in RED or BLUE . RED aerials indicate a boost increase (nanaca will teleport and give taichi a "helpful push"). BLUE aerials indicate a downward boost.
6. Ultimately, the game ends when taichi falls into the arms of misato (the girl with glasses) who forces taichi to stop (thus, it is best to avoid this character, unless if she is equipped with the SPECIAL feature, she will provide the highest power boost of all). Other ways of losing the game varies depending on what angle you started, and the unfortunate encounters of characters you come across (the two male characters do not contribute favourably with the collision).

4. Rules: each of the 10 characters comprise the rules for this game.

Nanaca: this is you! You have the ability to teleport and provide an extra aerial crash to boost taichi upwards or downwards.

Touko: she will offer a boost, however, it is not a very high altitude.

Kiri: her boost is directed at a 45 degree angle.

Misato: she will cause taichi's flight to a complete halt (thus, ending the game).

Sakuraba hiroshi: no boost given, but he will change your angle direction or slow you down.

Youko: this character is bad news. She does nothing to benefit your goal. The next time you hit a female character, she will block you from having the power effects. Stay clear!

Tomoki: he slows you down.

Miki: she will give you a launch-type boost. (my personal favourite character!)


5. Resources: depending on the situation, when you come in contact with a character, the word SPECIAL (you will know this if a beeping sound occurs) will reveal. If you click your mouse immediately, a powerful boosting effect will ensue (2 or 3 characters will combine their powers which will skyrocket taichi into the air!). Only 5 characters (all females) can make this happen: miki, kiri, touko, misato, and nanaca.
In terms of nanaca's aerial crashes, there are only 3 RED aerials , so use them strategically and wisely. The BLUE aerials are unlimited but takes some time to recover.


6. Conflict: as you browsed through and tried to get to know each character's role in the RULES section, some characters serve as negative obstacles to prevent you from reaching your goal. Misato stops you from flying, youko blocks you from gaining any boost effects, and the male characters slows you down or changes your angle.


7. Outcome: I played this game for over 2 years now and for what I know, this game does not have an ending. Nanaca crash is a self-competing game where you are determined to beat your own highscore (and the scores of your opponents, depending on where you play NC, some sites provide a chatbox where online players boast their highscores to each other). In her article, consalvo discussed four fundamental elements as a way of approaching a critical mind to approaching games.


A) object inventory: the author defined this category when "the player is often encouraged to collect various objects that are used to enhance the avatar or gameplay, to help in solving puzzles, or to aid in ultimately 'winning' the game" (consalvo, 4). Although objects are not being collected or earned in NC, the user is already been given the objects (i.E. The red and blue aerials), and it is up to him or her to decide when these objects should be applied throughout the game. This makes the game a bit more complex compared to other games where possible bonuses or incentives are available.


B) interface study: consalvo interpreted this as "any on-screen information that provides the player with information concerning the life, health, location or status of the character, as well as battle or action menus. " (consalvo, 5). In NC, there are apparent displays of on-screen information that gives the user a good idea of his or her current status while playing the game. A good example that illustrates this is the active running score. If the user is playing the game against other users (in other sites, chatboxes are offered), the highscore becomes the prime motivating factor. There are two scores displayed: the best record and new record. In one incident, I managed to beat another person's record, which caused my score to blink and was now transferred as the "best record". Not only this became a positive reinforcement to my self-esteem as an amateur casual gamer, but I became hooked to the game! Thus, interface features such as the active highscore can help users "see what information is privileged" (consalvo, 6).

C) interaction map: this "involves examining the choices that the player is offered in regards to interaction-not with objects, but with other player characters. " according to consalvo (6). This is readily apparent in NC when taichi comes into contact with either of the 9 characters involved in the game. The collision of each character can indicate a positive or negative effect, which ultimately can result in either progressing farther in the game or falling behind. As well, the interaction in NC is also high when the "special" icon is activated, which consists of combining the powers of 2 or 3 characters.


D) gameplay log : the overall environment of NC revolves around a fun, simplistic game catered for everyone's amusement. The "look and feel" features of the game are fairly plain and easy to read. Although the instructions are written in japanese, the creators also made visually-animated instructions which are very easy to comprehend and are self-explanatory. The theme song is very light and playful, signifying nanaca's mischief (although colliding into a stranger would be considered quite extreme, haha). The strengths of NC is its simplistic goal (to keep taichi up in the air while maintaining the longest distance). Although it might sound easy at first, however, the user quickly finds out that it would require a lot of patience, timing, and concentration in order to sustain his or her objective. I also enjoyed the different characters and their distinct powers and effects that they have on the target - it just throws unexpected, random curveballs for the users to juggle. As for the game's weakness, NC does not have a save point nor the option for its user to save his or her highscore (unless if the user beats the top score then their new score is automatically replaced). This can be very frustrating, especially with the amount of time dedicated to having an impressive score that you worked for! Other than that, NC is a great stress-relieving casual game! I highly recommend it!
