Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

Ni no kuni oroboros

With the oroboros there is no question what to focus on: it is a caster, through and through. The only real trick with raising one is that, while it has a very high magic attack, oroboros won't learn any offensive elemental tricks on its own until after you metamorphose it for the first time.

However, once you've reached that stage, it becomes a consistent and reliable attacker. One fun thing to try with oroboros is to recruit two and metamorphose one into each of the final forms. It may not be as flashy as having three different familiars, but it certainly rounds out your casting power!

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

On your first trip to ding dong dell, you will encounter the oroboros, a creature that looks like a lizard that curls up and rolls around like a wheel. This familiar is not only fun to watch roll around but is also one of the most powerful caster familiars you can get for oliver. The best part is that they are available as soon as you can recruit familiars!

Proper care and feeding

With the oroboros there is no question what to focus on: it is a caster, through and through. The only real trick with raising one is that, while it has a very high magic attack, oroboros won't learn any offensive elemental tricks on its own until after you metamorphose it for the first time. However, once you've reached that stage, it becomes a consistent and reliable attacker.

While the choice is ever yours in how you want to feed your familiars, our suggested distribution of bonus points is:

Magic attack +30
defense +20

Because it has a high evasion and the evade command, oroboros is not meant to take too many hits so beefing up its defense a bit will help for those occasions when it is unavoidable. Past that, focusing on its obvious strength in elemental tricks, you’ll be well-served to boost oroboros' already high magic attack.

Metamorphosis

Once your oroboros metamorphoses into chloroboros and reaches level 16 it will learn its first elemental trick, plasma ball. Fill out its list with a handful of other elemental tricks by feeding it gems and you have a fast-moving arsenal of magical power. For the second and final metamorphosis you will choose between obscuroboros and flouroboros.

Obscuroboros is a dark elemental familiar and possesses much stronger defensive capabilities than its counterpart. It also learns a bevy of very powerful dark elemental tricks that give it a whole lot of punch in combat.

Flouroboros on the other hand, is a light elemental familiar with a higher overall magic attack than obscuroboros. It does not learn as many offensive tricks but it learns upsy-daisy (early on at level 26), a trick that can be used to revive an unconscious party member!

One fun thing to try with oroboros is to recruit two and metamorphose one into each of the final forms. It may not be as flashy as having three different familiars, but it certainly rounds out your casting power!

Best buddies

Oroboros is a vermes family familiar and is best placed with oliver for the 10% affinity boost. The rest of your party is likely going to depend heavily on which of the final two forms of oroboros you choose. If you choose to metamorphose into flouroboros you will want to fill out your party with some powerful attackers like naja or mite . Should you choose obscuroboros you may need to throw an extra healer into your mix or add another familiar for tanking to make sure you don't soak up too much damage.

Tips and tricks

Experiment with a variety of different elemental tricks and set ups on your oroboros' trick list. By mid to late game it is still a particularly capable attacker and having multiple elemental tricks on hand will allow it to exploit a tough foe or boss's weaknesses and deal some impressive bonus damage.

Experiment by giving your oroboros exclusively supporting abilities and take advantage of its speed to dart around the battlefield spot-healing your allies during prolonged battles.

Are there any tricks or tips you have for using oroboros and its forms in your parties? If you have any advice or suggestions, feel free to let us know in the comments section down below or even just share if there's a particular familiar you would like to see spotlighted!

Ni no kuni: the 10 best familiars, ranked

Ni no kuni is famous for its pokémon-esque familiar system, and here are 10 of the most useful and adorable collectable critters in the franchise.

Ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch originally launched in 2013 for playstation 3 to critical acclaim. It went on to have a sequel with ni no kuni 2: revenant kingdom for playstation 4 in 2018. Fortunately for fans who missed out on the first title, the game was re-released for playstation 4, PC, and nintendo switch in 2019.

Ni no kuni follows the story of oliver, a young boy who discovers that he belongs in another world and is actually a wizard. It's up to oliver and his companion drippy to save the other world from the evil wizard shadar. There are familiars that can help in battles, an,d once esther has joined your team, you can recruit even more familiars. Check out the ten best familiars below, excluding the golden versions, which are stronger counterparts but are only available post-clear.

10 dinoceros

As part of the dracones genus, dinoceros is an ideal familiar for oliver. It is vulnerable to poison but has nothing that it is highly vulnerable to. Additionally, it's easy to level and has some very powerful moves.

Dinoceros can be found at the genie's steps, and it metamorphoses into destroceros, before becoming either catastroceros or demoliceros. To ensure its final form is the powerhouse you want it to be, you should wait until destroceros learns belly buster at level 16 before metamorphosing it into its final form, and catastroceros is usually the preferred choice.

9 whippersnapper

Whippersnapper is arguably the best familiar to fulfill the role of a tank for oliver. As part of the vermes genus, it has an affinity with oliver. It can be found in the deep dark wood area.

Its next evolutionary form is trapper snapper, and then it can morph into either snaptrap or claptrap, both of which are good. However, if you find you need a little extra help, choose claptrap as its final form, as it has some healing tricks it can use to support the party.

8 bonehead

Bonehead is part of the mortui genus, and this makes it the perfect choice for an attacker for swaine who has an affinity with this genus. Not only does it deliver strong attacks, but it also has a resistance to physical attacks. Boneheads can be found in the golden grove-south area and morph into bone ranger before its final forms of either bone brigadier or bone baron.

Bone baron is the recommended choice for players, which can also be found in the shimmering sands desert area. Generally, however, it is better to level your familiars yourself to make them as strong as possible.

7 hooray

Hooray is part of the aquatica genus, and this makes it an ideal attacker for esther's team. Arguably, it is the best attacker for her, as not only is it a powerful attacker, but it has high speed and defense too. Additionally, it has a good range of offensive tricks at its disposal.

Hoorays can be found in the sea just south of the summerlands, generally around castaway cove. It metamorphoses into hip-hooray before its final branching forms of grimray or springray.

6 oroboros

Oroboros is part of the vermes genus, making oliver the best choice for this critter due to his affinity with them. It has a high magic stat that makes it a brilliant spellcaster or healer choice for oliver to use depending on the final form that the player chooses.

Oroboros is found in the rolling hills area and metamorphoses into chloroboros before its final forms of either obscuroboros or fluoroboros. For a healer role, choose fluoroboros, but, for a spellcaster role, choose obscuroboros.

5 monolith

Monolith is part of the automata genus, so it is best used with swaine who has an affinity with this type. Monolith is a brilliant tank choice for swaine, as it has a natural resistance to physical attacks as well as a high defense.

Monoliths can be found in the bayous area near castaway cove and metamorphose into megalith before its final forms of paleolith or neolith. Both final forms are good, but paleolith has a handy trick called "upsy-daisy," which revives an unconscious ally.

4 napcap

Napcaps are exceptional spellcasters and very handy healers to have in your party. As part of the flora genus, they are best used with esther.

Napcaps are found in the golden grove area and metamorphose into duncecap before its final forms of madcap or nightcap. To make it the most efficient healer, you might want to get it to level 32, as duncecap to learn "second wind," before morphing it into a third form. Nightcap is the better healer/support role of the final forms based on the tricks it can learn.

3 sillymander

Sillymander is the fastest familiar in the game and can also hit hard, making it a great choice for an attacker in your team. As part of the vermes genus, they are best used with oliver who has an affinity with them.

Sillymanders can be found in the vault of tears, and it metamorphoses into slamander before it transitions into its final forms of pyromander or petramander. Pyromander is the best choice, as petramander has a weakness to physical attacks.

2 lumberwood

Lumberwood is of the flora genus and is best suited for esther. It is the best tank in the game, and, if you have esther set to defense and she has this little guy out, she essentially never dies.

Lumberwood can be found in the no longer mine area and metamorphoses into limberwood before turning into either umberwood or wildwood. Wildwood is the preferred choice of most players, but, if you find you are struggling a little, then choose umberwood as it has some healing tricks.

1 toko

Toko is capable of becoming one of the best powerhouse healers if the player is willing to put the time in. Not only is it a grind to obtain as it only has a 2% chance of being recruited and is prone to running away, but it also takes a long time to build it up to its final forms.

Tokos can be found on ugly duckling isle and give massive amounts of EXP as a reward, so that's one upside to farming them. Its next form is tokotoko, eventually metamorphosing into either tokotocold or docotoko. Tokotocold can heal the entire party with its healing rain trick, while docotoko is a good choice for party buffs and removing status ailments as well as being able to revive party members.

Now, there are quite a few items that can be had here on the world map… however, let us make a quick stop at our destination first… after grabbing a couple of quick treasures!

Tip: you can view the world map by pressing R1. This should help with finding treasures and specific locations.

Important:

***** indicates a twinkling forage point; these restore their contents over time.

Ï indicate a unique treasure.

***** just to the west on the hill you are on has some twinkling stars; check them out for a bunch of [BOOSTER SHOTS] .

Ï on the northwestern side of this hill is a skeleton and a set of three large bones sticking out of the ground; examine the area around the middle bone to find some [SUPPLE LEATHER] .

Note: on your map these bones are displayed as the southern-most skeleton.

Note: all twinkling stars on the world map will respawn after a set amount of time has passed. These items are marked with an asterisk ( ***** ) in the item listing above.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

Once you have those, proceed northeast to the entrance of ding dong dell . After a quick tutorial on changing your viewpoint, enter the castle. Your visit inside is extremely short; after just one scene, head back out on the world map. Your new destination is now the deep dark wood to the far north.

Now it’s time to gather the rest of the treasure!

***** directly southeast of ding dong dell, along the eastern mountains, is another set of twinkling stars; examine these to get a [PLAINSWORT FLOWER] .

Ï just to the south-southwest of those stars is a hill in the shape of an ‘S’, with a small forest in the top hook (on the lower plains); search this forest for [PIE x2] .

***** just to the northeast of ding dong dell is a very small pond with a waterfall letting out to the south. On the eastern side of it are some twinkling stars; examine them to receive some [SPRINGWATER].

Ï on the western side of that small pond check the waterfall to find a [SOUR SUNDAE].

Ï just northeast of the small pond is a chasm with a body of water at the bottom, and there are two sets of woods just to the east of them, but up on a higher level. Examine the lone tree on the southwest part of the northern woods to find [CHOCOLATE x2].

Ï on the western side of the lake surrounding the city is a small peninsula; search nearby the waterfall to find a [WOODEN SWORD].

***** to the far west of ding dong dell, tucked away in the southwestern corner below a body of water, is a small set of trees with some twinkling stars; examine the stars to receive another bunch of [BOOSTER SHOTS].

Ï just to the northeast of those stars is a skeleton beside a hill; search the nearby (eastern) edge on the top of this hill to find [WHITE BREAD x3] .

Ï look at your local map; to the northwest of ding dong dell is a set of two bones sticking out of the ground just to the right of a hill. (it’s just south of what looks like a giant rib cage near a river.) make your way to those bones, and you’ll see that there are actually three of them; check the ground there to find [CAKE x2 ].

***** directly east/northeast from these bones, alongside the eastern mountains, you’ll see some more twinkling stars; examine these, and you’ll receive another [PLAINSWORT FLOWER] .

Ï to the far north from here, you’ll see the river dumping into a lake; if you check the very topmost southeastern side of it beside the trees, you’ll find a [GIANT’S TOOTH] accessory.

***** head south and follow the river stream west. When it ends in a large pond with high mountains nearby, check the northern side of the river to spot twinkling stars. These ones will give you a [SPRINGWATER] .

Ï from the southern side of the river, go west, then north past the pond/lake onto the northern side of it to get under a rock formation, high above the water; check the eastern side of the trees - between the pillar and rock wall - to find a [WELL-WORN SWORD] .

Ï to the west is a bridge; cross it, then check where the brook meets the edge of the trees near the waterfall to find some [SUPPLE LEATHER] .

Ï northwest of here, look for a set of three large singular bones sticking out of the ground. Check the ground to find a bottle of [ICED COFFEE] .

Once you have all of these treasures, feel free to battle monsters for a while if you please. Otherwise, you’re ready to enter the deep dark wood !

Ni no kuni wrath of the white witch remastered – beginner guide

Beginner guide

Money

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

With as many companions/familiars as you get, fitting them all with weapons and armor can be quite difficult as equipment in this game does not come cheaply. And mana restoring items will slowly but surely also burn a hole in your pocket…

However there is a little trick you can use once you have unlocked familiar retreat to make your financial situation a lot better. Upon your first visit to it you will receive a one time gift of 3 drops for each sign + 3 great sage’s secret. The latter are essentially elixir type of items which restore all your HP and MP and as we all know will they are too good to ever be used so you might as well just sell them.

Luckily for us each of them sells for a whopping 6000 guilders. Yes, 6000. And you get 3 of them at a point in time in the game where you only have about 4000. So I strongly recommend selling them whenever you are low on money. However don’t sell them at once so that in case you die you will lose less money if you chose to continue.

Familiar signs

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

Familiar signs give you a 20% damage boost to the sign it is strong against.

Single sun does 20% more damage to single/double moon and 20% less to single/double star.
Single moon does 20% more damage to single/double star and 20% less to single/double sun.
Single star does 20% more damage to single/double sun and 20% less to single/double moon.

If a familiar has a double sign that damage boost goes up to 30%. But so does also the damage penalty against the sign it is weak against. So if you have a double sign it is even more important to attack a neutral/strong sign.

Planet is a bit different with single planet doing 50% more damage to double planet. Double planet does 10% more to sun, moon and star.

You also get the following bonuses: (single/double)

  • Sun: 5/10% bonus resist to fire and sleep

  • Moon: 5/10% bonus resist to storm and poison

  • Star: 5/10% bonus resist to water and confusion

  • Planet: 5/10% bonus experience points

The distribution of signs is somewhat random. Most familiars can be either sun, moon, or star. They can also have a double sign though it is rarer than the single sign.
Some stronger familiars have a small chance to show up as either single or double planet. In this case, if a familiar shows up as single planet, it can’t show up as double planet. Same for reverse too. If it’s possible to be one, it can’t be the other.

Once you tame a familiar you cannot change it’s sign. It will keep the same sign forever even through metamorphosis.

Tactics

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

As you will quickly notice once you get new companions the AI in this game sucks. There is no way around if even with the tactics settings, however using it to your advantage will make life a little easier.

There are a few ways to go around this:

  • Personally I have set everyone to “keep us healthy” as they will generally heal themselves before getting killed and keep you topped up so you can focus on using your familiars (as opposed to switching to oliver to heal). They still attack and use magics so it is a nice compromise where they don’t kill themselves by neglecting to heal while still being aggressive when appropriate. The only downside is your companions will often run out of magic.

  • Another strategy to prevent them from using too much magic is to set everyone to “dont use any abilities” and choose familiars with strong attack and good defense as the first familiar for everyone on your party. However this will require more manual healing and magical familiars can do much more damage than physical ones in some cases so it might not be ideal dps wise.

Overall my point is: if you have trouble with the AI play around with the tactics and which familiars you are giving to whom as it can make a big difference in the effectiveness of the AI.

Battle tips

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

1) use L2 and R2 to navigate the battle menus.

At the start you will likely use your D-pad to navigate those but the downside is that it will hinder your ability to move as your left thumb can’t be on the control stick and D-pad at the same. Which bring us to the next point.

2) keep moving during battle.

Ni no kuni is a mix of turn-based elements and actions based combat. Do not get into the habit of just standing there and mashing the attack button as this can easily get you killed even in normal encounters. Movement is key for a number of reason:

  • You can bait out attacks to gain time to cast a spell without taking damage

  • You can entirely dodge certain attacks that would otherwise hit you

  • You can gain time while waiting for a command that is currently on cooldown (healing e.G.)

  • You can pick up orbs before they disappear (especially helpful in boss battles)

  • Some bosses can only be damaged from behind

  • Probably more clever situations I can’t think of right now

3) steal from bosses

Without spoiling too much you will get the ability later in the game to steal items from enemies. While nightmares and bounties never carry items to steal, bosses always carry items that are worthwhile stealing.

Tame chances

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Familiar Spotlight - Oroboros, ni no kuni oroboros.

Each monster has a set chance for it to be tamed. Even though the game says that “the stronger you are the easier it becomes” this is not true. It also does not matter whether enemies run away from you before battle or not (as I initially assumed).

Which shows all the tame chances for every enemy in the game.

So, let's see, what we have: overview on your first trip to ding dong dell, you will encounter the oroboros, a creature that looks like a ... At ni no kuni oroboros
