Familiars

The first familiar encountered in the game, named mitey by default.


Familiars (imajinn) are creatures that the player can send out in a battle to fight for them. They level up and evolve alongside the player, and you can recruit certain enemies to the player's team. Characters — such as oliver, esther, and swaine — can use familiars to fight in place of themselves during creature battles. These familiars are controlled through commands issued directly from the heart of whoever their "owner" may be, even non-magic persons are known to have familiars. Since a character controls their familiar(s) through their heart, the familiar(s) and the character share HP and MP and while familiars can be used in battle at any time, they can only fight for a certain amount of time before its stamina becomes depleted, reducing its effectiveness until they have re-charged. While a few familiars are simply obtained through story progression during the game, most must be tamed. Familiars come in a wide variety of shapes and forms that can be obtained as the player travel through the world.


Obtaining familiars


To obtain familiars in the game, the player must first complete the temple of trials, there the great sage solomon will give esther a harp which gives you the ability to tame familiars. To tame a familiar, the player must serenade the creature during battle and after it has been defeated, hearts may appear above it, giving you the chance to serenade it by switching to esther therefore taming it. However, if not done fast enough, the monster will run away. If successful, you'll be able to keep it or let it go. If you keep it, you'll have to name it and then it will take up a place in the familiar reserve or if not possible, join the familiar retreat.


The only exceptions are:



  • The mite oliver obtains at the beginning of the game, as it's summoned with the form familiar spell.

  • The thumbelemur oliver is given by tommy stout.

  • The seed sprite that hatches from the egg in golden grove.

  • The drongo esther starts with when she joins oliver.

  • The familiar given to you by solomon sage when completed the temple of trials. You may choose one of the three he offers you: the boggly-boo, the lagoon naiad, or the shonky-honker

  • The hurly swaine starts with when he joins the party.

  • The familiars you get through 'familiar tickets' at the completion of derwin's quest, which includes the elusive lumberwood, relixx and dinoceros.

There are 4 astral signs that a familiar may fall under within the game. Sun, moon, star, and planet types. Each type is more effective against one of the other types than against others. The following is taken from page 155 of the wizards companion and tells how the signs are related:


"the light of the sun will outshine the moon, the glow of the moon will put stars in shade. The glamour of the stars will cause sun to swoon, when two combine, their strength's sum is made. The once-ringed planet stands apart from the three, while the twice-ringed planet rules as king. Before it, sun, moon, and stars bend their knee, yet it holds no sway o'er its once-ringed sibling."


Metamorphosis

The evolution of a mite known as a mighty mite.


In the game, the familiars can evolve through a process called metamorphosis into a stronger form of themselves by using stones that correspond to the familiar's type. (ex. A mites-type is a sun sign, so to metamorphose, it needs to be fed a sundrop.) after feeding them the stone, they will metamorphisise into a stronger version of themselves. From its first incarnation, a familiar can be metamorphosed twice. The third and final metamorph, allows the player to choose between two different versions of the familiar which can be chosen to suit your play-style and which role you want that familiar to hold within your fighting group.


For the final form of the familiar you must use a jumbo drop.


Tricks and miracle moves


In the game, familiars will learn special moves other than the normal attack and defense moves they learn as they level up. These moves are called "tricks." each trick has an elemental quality which determines its usefulness on the battlefield. The elemental quality of a trick dictates its effectiveness against the target creature being attacked and may have greater or lesser effect on the opponent. Each trick can give you an advantage or a disadvantage over your opponent, so choose your attacks wisely.


After being metamorphosized, familiars will be able to learn different tricks and acquire additional slots for tricks and moves to be equipped, meaning that more will be available in battle at one time.


Note: every trick that is used in battle consumes the MP of the respective character. If no MP is left, then tricks cannot be used. They also have a cooldown like any other battle option.


Miracle moves are extremely strong tricks that can only be performed after getting a rare glim known as a golden glim. Unlike normal tricks, miracle moves use no MP whatsoever. Both players and familiars can obtain these golden glims. Although some familiars may have the same type of miracle move, each familiar and character has their own unique skill with unique effects. (for example, mite's miracle move, slash dance, hits all enemies, whereas puss in boats' miracle move, inner strength, increases its attack strength.)


Note: A golden glim will stay on the field for a very short time. If not captured quickly, it will float away. Grab them fast!


Feeding, fullness, and familiarity


Once you have obtained a familiar, you can go to the creature cage and feed it. All types of treats can be fed to your familiar, but a familiar genus has a favorite treat. Treats can add stats to your familiar, such as accuracy, evasion, etc, but feeding your familiar will fill its fullness meter, limiting how many treats any specific familiar can be fed at any one time. Feeding a familiar with treats, favorite or not favorite, will fill its familiarity meter. Feeding it its favorite treat will boost its familiarity meter even more than feeding your familiar non-favorite treats. The favorite treat of all familiars can be located in the wizards companion section for each genus.


Familiar treats


Food items, or "familiar treats", are given to familiars in order to help train them outside of battle. These food items cannot be eaten by normal party members or seen in the normal item menu, they only appear in the familiar-training menu.

Boss fight difficulty spikes

Has anyone else experienced this?


I find the fights with the regular enemies pretty easy but then all of a sudden boss fights are 15x harder! It's incredibly frustrating. Both my party members keep dying far too easy and they burn up all their MP 3 minutes into the fight.


If you have any tips for beating bosses in this game it would be greatly appreciated.

Well for one pay attention to what drippy tells you. I don't know what boss your on but drippy stops every single boss fight to feed you a tip about its weakness at some point. If you've got the all attack/all defense commands available yet then make sure to put party members on defense at the appropriate times. You might also just have to flat out grind a bit. There are difficulty spikes in this game and if you aren't leveled appropriately you'll get worked.

The game has problems I noticed with this yeah. I was at a boss once where drippy told me that the boss was weak against lightning, but I had no one with a decent lighting spell at that point so it was a long and boring struggle to survive while both my party members were dead. I just ended up running around, blocking until a yellow orb appeared over and over again.


Also I don't know where you are at, but a good chunk into the game they give you a completely game-changing ability; the ability to order your party members to block!! Haha, I found this insane from a design point of view. I just don't understand why they did not let you do this as soon as you got your first party member!! The were a number of times before this that I would just simply not even bother with my party member, because every time a boss (or a strong enemy even) used a special move they died. Ugh, and the prices of resurrection items is a killer.


Also one thing I found is that before the block command my party members would always die when they ran out of MP, but with the block command whenever a boss does a big move and hits everyone the "block effect" (?) will cause blue orbs to spew out of it, making MP management a lot better.


Overall though I really like the game, but man. It's very dragon quest in the grinding bits :s

I've conditioned myself to grind like a madman in jrpgs so I didnt have much trouble with any of the bosses.


Where are you in the story? Once you have access to alchemy and the all out commands the game becomes significantly easier. The 30 MP recovery item is really easy to craft as soon as you get the pot, and the 70 one comes an hour or two later.


Your companions are going to die until you get the all out commands, so until then just set esther to keep you healthy when you're running low on HP and guard all of the big cinematic attacks yourself.


You might need to get some new familiars as well. You can find monolith on the way to castaway cove he's the stone tablet. The guy has insane defence and has a taunt move that draws all agro to him. Really helpful if you have a glass cannon like purrloiner (found in the same area) on your team.

Sadly it might just be a case of you needing to grind a bit. Companion AI is unreliable at best and aside from having a familiar that is effective against an enemy fights largely come down to attacking away and killing stuff purely because you have leveled enough, rather than any sort of mastery over the systems in place.


Past few boss fights (about 30 hours in) i've just been ignoring drippy's advice and instead using mite for warcry then swapping to purrloiner and spamming attack till healing is needed. (well, it is their second forms but I can't remember the names off hand). It tended to do a lot more damage than what drippy said to do anyway.


The randomised on acquire stat growth along with the rarity of tameable pets + dual sign ones for that matter make it near impossible to come up with any concrete party compositions.


Also, bear in mind everyone has restrictions on familiars. Oliver uses milites, vermes and dracones. Esther aquatic, aves and flora, etc.


Using a familiar they specialise in grants a 10% bonus to it's abilities, so there is no reason to use ones outside of those genuses.


I enjoy the game, but the combat system is rather shallow and lacking in strategy. So the best I can suggest is make sure you have the right familiar types equipped to people and that they have good stat growth along with covering all the signs and elements that you can. And if all that fails, you might have to resort to side questing and grinding i'm afraid.

Not not all familiars can be tamed some you cant find anywhere you can get them by morphing the earlier forms


Such as captain whambatic and overripe buncher


CTRL + F to find the familiar you want if not found in the list then you can get it by morphing only

I'm not wanting to spend a whole lot of time with familiars, so maybe we can use this thread to talk about which ones are good.


You really only need 3, don't you? At most, that's the amount that can join you in a battle I think. So which familiars would make the best team to raise?

Where are you up to tenshi? Don't want to spoil anything, but you can end up using more than three familiars in a battle.

Praestorian_lord - I'm standing at the entrance to the 2nd dungeon, and I doubt I'll have time to play for a while.


The more important question is, I usually end up 100%'ing games, and NNK looks like it has a lot of creatures and stuff, but I've been hearing people finishing the game in about 40 or so hours. In my opinion, 80 hours is relatively short, and I'll probably manage to spend at least that much time on it, but I'd prefer not to go overboard, as I do have other priorities due to college.


So I was wondering what the most efficient way to go about using familiars would be for the sake of completing the game (probably including bonus bosses, and the like.)


Also, I have the DLC familiar code (though I'm not at the point where I can access it yet). Is that thing any good?

At the point I'm up to, the best strategy seems to be versatility. I have one 'tank', one 'caster' and one speed demon and that's serving me pretty well 90% of the time. It only becomes a problem when you fight bosses with elemental weaknesses that you pretty much have to exploit. It's good to have a number of different familiars to cover all possible bases, but in the end you can just use oliver as your caster or healer if necessary.


To be honest though I don't think it matters all that much, you can probably grind your way to victory with just about any combination. It's more about learning what to do when.

Is there a limit to the # of familiars you can have at one time? Or is that what those manhole things by the save stones are?


Do all your familiars game EXP, even when not fighting?

You can end up storing a few hundred familiars, but the method by which you catch them means that'll be plenty.


You can only have a limited number of familiars travelling with you in your 'party', though. You specify three familiars for your character to use in battle, all of which will gain experience even if you don't use them. You can also carry three 'reserves' which you can swap with your active familiars from the menu without having to go to the 'bank'.


E.G. ON THE WORLD/DUNGEON MAP:


Oliver is assigned familiars A, B and C
familiars D, E and F are your reserves and can be swapped with any of A, B or C


Oliver can fight using any or all of A, B and C (but NOT D, E or F)
at the end of the battle, all 'assigned' familiars (A, B and C) will gain experience even if they didn't all fight. If you begin with A and never switch him out, B and C will still earn exp. So you can basically use B or C as training slots.


WHEN NEAR A MANHOLE COVER


Any of A through F can be swapped into storage for any other familiars you've caught.
